“The Mullets” is a one-joke sitcom that blew its punch line three promos ago. Michael Weaver and David Hornsby star as brothers Dwayne and Denny Mullet, who sport the redneck hairdo of the same name. All their friends share the hair and lifestyle, which consists of cheep beer, bad videos and daily dinners courtesy of the local convenience store. Creators-writers-producers Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, who have perfectly respectable credits from “The Simpsons” and “Futurama,” should probably keep this one off their resumes.

Dwayne and Denny hope to parlay their Sherman Oaks roofing business into a construction career. Pilot’s main gag is that these hard rockers are forced to listen to top-40 radio in a bid to win tickets to Wrestlemania — a surprise birthday gift to mom, Mandi (Loni Anderson). She’s moved to swankier digs with her new hubby, gameshow host Roger Heidecker (John O’Hurley), leaving the boys alone to watch raunchy TV and wrestling.

Show is all about the physical comedy — the hair, falling through and off roofs, ruining fancy dinner parties with fistfights and noogies. The supposedly heartwarming theme is that despite their social inadequacies, the Mullets are a close and loving family.
It’s a concept that works better for something like “Malcolm in the Middle,” which manages to satirize working class culture with both vitriol and empathy, but above all, clever writing. And it’s probably no coincidence that the opening seg to “The Mullets” looks remarkably similar to “Malcolm.”
Why Loni Anderson considered this a top choice for her return to television is a mystery — it’s counter casting into career oblivion. Saving grace for Weaver and Hornsby is that possibly no one will recognize them in their next project without the awful wigs.
Lori McCoy Bell has the dubious distinction of creating the best of the worst hairstyle of all time. Otherwise, the rest of the tech credits are purely perfunctory.
“The Mullets” debuts Sept. 11, and will air regularly Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m.
