“In Treatment” star Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze will play Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing, in “Patriots Day.”
The film, based on accounts from the 2013 bombing and the ensuing search for the Tsarnaev brothers, has started filming in the Boston area. The blasts killed three and injured 264 others.
Boston native Mark Wahlberg stars alongside John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon and Michelle Monaghan. The film co-stars Jimmy O. Yang, Michael Beach, Vincent Curatola and James Colby.
Peter Berg is directing from a script by Matt Charman (“Bridge of Spies”). Wahlberg, Scott Stuber, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson, Michael Radutzky and Dorothy Aufiero are producing.
CBS Films and Lionsgate are co-financing “Patriots Day,” which will be released on Dec. 21.
Wahlberg will portray a Boston Police Department officer who was central to the investigation and manhunt. Curatola will play longtime Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. Bacon is FBI agent Richard DesLauriers; James Colby is Billy Evans, the superintendent in charge of the Boston Police Department; and Goodman is police commissioner Ed Davis.
Michael Beach was cast this week to play former Gov. Deval Patrick.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot to death three days after the bombing. Dzhokhar Tsarnev was found guilty on 30 charges relating to homegrown terrorism last year and sentenced to death.
Wolff stars in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” He’s represented by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
Melikidze starred in “Beautiful Something” and “The Disturber.” He is repped by Adam Park of Park Noack Agency, and attorneys Eric Suddleson and Chris Abramson of Felker Toczek Suddelson Abramson.
