Set high on a hillside at the centre of the city this incredible citadel feels a little like it's been frozen in time, barely a car can be seen within the original walls, just restaurants, bars and local shops. The 13th century historical landmark is nothing short of a fairy tale with winding steps, towers, walls, hidden passageways and more history than a day trip could take in.

Hôtel de la Cité is over 100 years old and doesn't hold back on old school splendour. From the moment to walk into the grounds it's hard not to feel as if you've been transported into a real life fairy tale, and it's the magically quality of the turrets and towers of the original fort that apparently inspired Walt Disney himself for Sleeping Beauty's castle in the movie.

It's France people so you can imagine the foode, what's not to love about oysters, mussels, frites, steak haché and local treats including cassoluet, pates and salads. The hotel restaurant is Michelin-starred restaurant La Barbacane and comes highly recommended.
