Lilia Vu is 25 years of age. The LPGA Tour Pro has played brilliant golf this year. She has won two major championships which is a stupendous feat. In the Chevron Championship, in April 2023, she clinched the title after a play-off with Angel Yin. Later in August, she won the Women’s British Open title as well. Besides the majors, she also won the Honda LPGA in Thailand in February 2023.
With Vu soaring up to the number one position in the World Ranking in such a short span, she has earned a large fleet of loyal fans. And since the fans eagerly wanted to know about Vu’s family, we did some digging.
Lilia Vu was born on October 14, 1997, in Fountain Valley, California, to Douglas Vu and Yvonne Kieu Thuy. Her mom’s migration to the United States is a tale to tell and involves the heroics of her grandfather, who made the risky call to move. It wasn’t a simple plane journey spanning across a few hours.
Lilia Vu’s mother’s and grandfather’s migration from Vietnam
Dinh Du, Lilia Vu’s grandfather, did not feel comfortable raising his newborn daughter, Yvonne Kieu Thuy, in a war-torn Vietnam. While it was highly risky to leave the country without proper permissions, he took up the challenge, anyway.
Du organized a boat to escort his family safely out of the literal and metaphorical debris created by the war. He got everyone together in the boat, which had a capacity to hold 54 people. However, he had to accommodate 82 people in the vessel.
The boat apparently cracked and started taking water in because of the overload. Du acted quickly and used a flare to seek help. Luckily, an American vessel, the USS Brewton, discovered them and brought them into the United States.
Lilia Vu’s Parents
Yvonne Kieu Thuy grew up in the United States and on February 9, 1991, she married Douglas Vu, a golf instructor at David L. Lilia Vu’s golf journey began there. Her father, passionately motivated and trained his two children Andre, and Lilia, in golf. He trained Lilia until she joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Lilia has shared in interviews how her father was an important factor in her winning the Honda Classic. She said his advice to focus on the round alone helped her a lot. Her father believes that one good round can help her win the tournament. She said he said the same during the Chevron Championship as well.
Vu won both the events by very narrow margins. In the Honda event, the runner-up was one score behind her, and the third player was one more stroke behind. Similarly, in the Chevron Championship, Lilia Vu and Angel Yin played a playoff for the title. Her father gave her good advice. No doubt!
Lilia Vu’s Brother
Andre Vu’s Instagram bio says he is a ‘Digital Creator.’ His profile has several pictures of automobiles, especially off-road vehicles. He is also doing impressive stunts with his motorbike in some posts.
Andre went to the University of California, Riverside, to major in Communication and Media Studies. He played for the UC Riverside Golf Club while he was attending college. Three years older than Lilia, Andre Vu, in an interview, candidly shared how his sister is a better golfer than he is. This was when he was 18, and she was merely 15.

The siblings share an argumentative, playful dynamic between them. While a golf coach father and a golfer sibling surely kept her energy high, it was her grandfather who inspired Lilia Vu the most.
Lilia Vu’s emotional bonding with her grandfather
Naturally, growing up hearing about his bravery from the past, it’s no surprise that Lilia Vu has a lot of respect and admiration for her grandfather. From what she has shared in public about her relationship with her grandfather; it’s a bond deeper than respect alone.
Vu narrated how, during his last moments, she was planning on quitting golf. She said when she spoke to him in the hospital; he was thinking about her game and asked her to give her the best in the course. She gave him the credit for where she is today as a golfer.
She also mentioned how, during the Chevron Championship, she thought of her grandfather to revive her energy and get back into the game. Well, we all know how that turned out. She emerged victorious.
In the emotional moments after her first major title, at the Chevron Championship, Lilia Vu showed just how much family means to her. She stated that having her parents present with her during her tournaments is a huge boost of energy for her. She said she wants them everywhere she plays.
