Elon Musks X Foundation Backs Gina Caranos Lawsuit Against Disney and Lucasfilm

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Elon Musk’s X throws its hat—or should we say funds—in the ring, supporting Gina Carano’s legal battle with Disney.

This clash of titans pits the tech mogul’s financial might against the entertainment behemoth’s legal prowess, promising courtroom drama fit for a galaxy epic.

As Carano fights for reintegration into the Star Wars universe, Musk’s unexpected support adds intrigue to an already compelling story.

Will Musk and Carano’s alliance change the course of Hollywood justice, or will Disney’s defense strike back with the force of a Death Star? Stay tuned as the legal battle unfolds, with lightsabers at the ready and tweets ablaze, in a courtroom showdown that will undoubtedly have the galaxy talking. May the legal force be with them—this is a truly extraordinary legal drama.

Carano filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles against Disney and its Lucasfilm subsidiary after being let go from the Star Wars franchise series in February 2021.

Last year, Musk, who also runs Tesla, stated that X would cover the legal expenses of X users “if you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform.”

The lawsuit, which alleges wrongful discharge and sex discrimination, seeks Carano’s reinstatement in “The Mandalorian,” as well as monetary damages for the loss of her past pay and future employment as a result of her termination.

Carano kicked off the series after posting on Instagram and TikTok that conservatives in the United States were treated like Jews in Nazi Germany.

The actor had previously sparked online backlash for her posts on X, formerly Twitter, where she criticized COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates, updated her Twitter bio with the words “beep/bop/boop,” and criticized Black Lives Matter protesters.

Musk had said in August that X would fund the legal bills of X users “if you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform.”

Carano, in an X post on Tuesday, said she had responded on X to that offer by Musk, and “to my surprise,” she was contacted by a lawyer for the company, which eventually agreed to finance her suit.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude and thank you to @ElonMusk and @X for allowing me to bring my case to light,” Carano tweeted.

According to her lawsuit, “A short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, defendants made it clear that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable in their empire, and that those who dared to question or fail to fully comply would not be tolerated.”

“And so it was for Carano. Carano was fired from her role as Rebel Ranger Cara Dune on The Mandalorian as quickly as her character’s peaceful home planet of Alderaan was destroyed by the Death Star in an earlier Star Wars film, according to the lawsuit.

“And all because she dared to express her own opinions on social media platforms and elsewhere, standing up to the online bully mob that demanded her conformity to their extreme progressive ideology.”

In a tweet Tuesday in response to Carano’s post about the lawsuit, X stated, “As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we are proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano‘s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”

When Gina Carano was fired, Lucasfilm issued a statement saying, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and has no plans to be in the future.”
