After giving us a quick snapshot of what looked to be a new back tattoo in September, Billie Eilish has finally provided a full reveal of her latest ink: a large, stark black design running along her spine, from the nape of her neck down to the base of her back.
Tucked away in a carousel of photos, the fourth image is seemingly a throwback of Eilish in the tattoo studio: lying on the bed, ink still smudged and stencil to one side. She tagged tattoo artist Matias Milan in the photo, who reposted the image to his Instagram Stories, confirming he created the wood-grain design for the musician.
Further along in the carousel (image seven, in case you're looking), the now-healed tattoo can be seen peeking out of the side of Eilish's top, in a blurred photo with her dog, Shark.
Eilish first previewed the tattoo on 20 September, in an Instagram post that showed the tip of the design above one of her signature big T-shirts, worn with a silver necklace and an “Ochoa” snapback resting on top of her star-patterned knit beanie as pieces of her bright red and jet black hair peeked out from underneath.
While the double hat combo and some other random memes were almost enough to distract from the partial view of the tattoo, plenty of Eilish’s followers were anxious to see the entire design. “Please stop edging us and show the full tat,” one user commented, while a fan account with the username @billies_best_moments begged for clarification, writing, “Now tell us what the tat is 😭🤍.”
So, unsurprisingly, after Eilish's big reveal, fans have commented in their droves: “TATTOO REVEAL OMFG,” said one user, while another commented: “that back tattoo >>>>>>> 🔥🔥”.
It’s only been a few months since the last time Billie Eilish fans were teased with an obscured view of her ever-growing tattoo collection. In June, Eilish’s friend Annabel Zimmer snuck a glimpse at the “What Was I Made For” singer’s chest tattoo into the middle of a summer photo roundup, though the lettering was difficult to make out under the shadow of Eilish’s bikini. A month before that, the singer revealed just the head of a large dragon tattoo on her hip.
Though clearly an expert at Gen Z’s painstakingly effortless photo-dump format, Eilish took a break from social media earlier this year, revealing during a March appearance on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend that she had deleted all the apps from her phone. “I don’t look at it anymore,” she said, noting that the decision was “such a huge deal for me.”
At the time, Eilish said she felt the internet makes people (including herself) “gullible” and opted to take back control. All this to say, expect to see what Billie Eilish wants you to see precisely when she wants you to see it… Which is exactly how it should be.
