Aussie’s new Hemp Calm The Frizz Collection, including Hair Mask, Shampoo and 3-Minute-Miracle, launching July 2019, £4-6

THE HYPE

CBD is the ultimate buzzword in beauty right now. And while we’ve had hemp-infused skincare around for a while, Aussie is the first mainstream brand with a cult following to release hemp haircare including oils, masks and shampoo/conditioner, which promises to 'calm the frizz' - something we’re all needing during this humid weather.

BEAUTY BIO

I’m a total haircare snob, and a prime example of someone who could really benefit from this product. I have naturally thick, frizzy hair (that stands no chance in any kind of heat) that has been bleached, which also causes my locks to be very very dry - the reason why I was intrigued by products that not only promised that, but were also something more innovative than just “you’re going to have really shiny hair if you use this”.

The type of hemp used in the product is a cold pressed oil which improves the quality of the product, and Aussie have actually tested 80 versions of the new range’s formula on British women to come up with the final one. It also has the highest levels of omega 6 (essential for moisturising and anti-inflammation) used in haircare, so as one of the very first members of the public to put this to the test, I’m very excited to see if this will be joining my arsenal.

THE REVIEW:

First off, there’s no doubt that Aussie are known for their distinctive delicious smell. Unfortunately for all the fans out there, this one doesn’t have the same scent as the OG range, but it does still smell really, really good, and more fresh and summery as opposed to coconut, which I’m definitely not mad about.

I usually do a hair mask pretty much every time I wash my hair, so added in the Calm The Frizz hair mask to the shampoo and 3 Minute Miracle routine, and I have to admit, even with a scalp full of water, using the mask left my hair feeling a lot more lightweight than usual, and I really liked that it was a 3-minute job, instead of one that can usually take 15/20 minutes. However, I do think it could have more deep-conditioning properties, as from my experience as someone with thick hair, once dry it became apparent that hemp oil was not as frizz-fighting as my texture needs, although that is the USP of the range.

I have no doubt about the quality of the product - it’s been tested in 80 different formulas on British women, but it just so happened that I tried it during the midst of the unexpected heatwave, a chance to really put the products to the test and a time when we all need them most.

I’ve definitely used way worse things on my head, but under such extreme circumstances and for someone with hair that has never found the dream product it’s been waiting for, it just wasn’t meant to be this time.

THE VERDICT

Writing this 3 days post-wash, my hair isn’t showing any signs of grease and still has a super fragrant smell as though it’s been freshly washed, which is a definite plus if you’re looking for something for daily use.

For maximum impact, I’d probably leave the hair mask in a bit longer, to condition my hair further, and add in the mask and 3-Minute Miracle treatment to every wash to add the smoothing that Aussie is known for.

For someone with thinner, less dry hair, this range is perfect. And if you’re not convinced, it’s worth a try for a purse-friendly £6. If you have tough hair that’s a little more difficult to manage, more product and leaving it on for longer may be the answer as aside from the fragrance and softness that I get from other Aussie products, there was no “WOW!” difference when it came to texture, but I have to admit my hair was left feeling bouncy and salon-fresh. On the day-to-day I’d happily use any of the products on my hair, but in such extreme humidity it didn’t work for me.

There’s no indication as to what hair type the CBD range works best for so after one go, all is technically not lost, and if it is, we may just have to turn back to our trusty Miracle Moist…
